Paddling out

Why we started FRATE.

We train, surf, run, bike, hike, and sauna. We read labels. We'd already changed most of what goes into our bodies, so changing what sits against them seemed like the obvious next step.

The more research we did, the more we realized better materials were only half the equation. Most underwear is still designed to compress in the one area we didn't want compression. And many of the options addressing one problem seemed to ignore the other.

So we locked in on every single detail — the cotton and how far the certification actually goes, the dyes, the stretch fiber, the cut, the pouch, and how it holds up to everyday life. We wanted every part to hold up, not just the part a brand leads with.

Every part of it had to be worth wearing every day.

Including the part nobody talks about. Male anatomy is designed to sit outside the body, where temperature can be regulated. Yet most underwear — even many of the cleaner options — is cut to press against you in the exact area you don't want compression.

To us, choosing better underwear meant addressing both. Cleaner materials against your skin, and a cut that gives your anatomy the room it was designed to have. Clean fabric doesn't fix a compressed cut. A better cut doesn't replace better materials. We weren't willing to trade one for the other.

So we spent a year on it. Different manufacturers, different cuts, different materials, different sources. We never expected to spend late nights designing underwear. Once we started, it was hard to stop.

What we landed on: 95% GOTS Certified Organic Cotton. OEKO-TEX® STANDARD 100 Certified Materials. BPA-Free Elastane for the stretch. And an athletic cut built around our Natural Fit 3D Pouch — designed to support without unnecessary compression.

We keep the team lean so that we can sell at a price that makes sense, because we believe healthy choices should be accessible to everyone.

One brief. Three pack sizes. Nothing you don't need.

The FRATE teamVenice, CA

The name
frāter Latin · brother

FRATE comes from the Latin frater — brother. In Romanian, frate still means brother, and in everyday speech it lands closer to bro or mate.

We chose it because FRATE is about looking out for one another, starting with something every man wears every day.

It's also a nod to all the brothers, bros and mates who've backed us along the way.

Here's to returning the favor.
